Author(s) / Editor: An Interview with Sean Lett, Manager, Cognex Corporation, Natick, MA, USA. Interviews and Edited by Professor Paul G. Ranky, PhD, NJIT, New Jersey, USA.
Description: Level: Quality control engineers, manufacturing and assembly system designers, visual factory designers, operations managers, team leaders, associates / operators, workforce productivity improvement managers, students & faculty, interested in eliminating unnecessary waste, lost time, and workers' compensation costs by improving factories, and literally any business by means of Visual Factory Management & Control (VFM) methods and technologies. Also excellent for undergraduate / graduate education and research.

Industrial Sponsors/ Contributors include, with special thanks to Cognex Inc., Natick, USA, Rockwell Automation, Inc., USA, CIMware Ltd. UK, CIMware USA, Inc., and others.

Contents: This publication is a professional quality DVD video covering machine vision systems for zero-defect-focused visual factories. Solutions for dimensional gauging, product / process defect identification, robot guidance and/or identification are discussed and partially demonstrated.

Machine vision, the industrial implementation of computer vision, is an essential building block of visual factories. VFM represents an integrated set of methods and technologies for the purpose of reducing waste at all levels, improving product / process quality, profitability, increasing lean production control, productivity, safety, on-demand / just-in-time (JIT) production / delivery, and employee morale in a factory, or virtually in any business. The key to the success of VFM is the expert implementation of 'visual controls', making quality, dimensional integrity, and other information truly visible and clear for everyone. The fundamental purpose of visual controls using machine vision systems is to help employees to improve their processes, understand their roles, and to contribute to the success of the corporation, whilst reducing waste at all levels. This can be achieved by creating up-to-date information in a format everyone can easily absorb, as and when, and where they need it. VFM typically begins by following an integrated process, requirements, and risk analysis method, embedded into a statistical analysis and multimedia framework. As a result, the team will have a clear picture about what needs to be done, when and how. The next step is typically the implementation of a 'Five S', a 'Lean Six-Sigma', and a 'Monozukuri' program. (See more about these methods and technologies in Professor Ranky's Library.)

What you will learn: Having watched the DVD video, you will be able to understand many important aspects of machine vision, the industrial implementation of computer vision, within an integrated engineering environment.
